Db2 or Database 2, is a collection of relational database solutions developed by IBM and delivered on the mainframe platform. It is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) that is used to efficiently store, analyze, and retrieve data.
Db2 solutions include operational databases, data warehouses, data lakes, and rapid data. It also includes Object-Oriented features and non-relational structure. The Db2 family helps your organization explore the value of AI by making your data simple and accessible.
Brief History
DB2 was originally exclusively available on IBM mainframes, but by the 1990s, it had migrated to a variety of other platforms, including LUW (Linux, Unix, Windows), i5/OS, and even PDAs. The Universal Server moved the technology to an object-related SQL DBMS, allowing developers to create custom data types from more primitive ones.
It shared-nothing architecture, which distributes a database across many, networked Db2 servers for scalability. Db2 Enterprise includes a feature, which is currently known as the Database Partitioning Feature.
After IBM bought Informix Software in 2001, Db2 was updated to integrate object-relational extensions, making it an object-SQL database management system.
Informix was purchased by IBM in 2001, and many of its database features were included in the DB2 product range.
DB2 9 on distributed platforms and DB2 9 on z/OS were given the codename “Viper” by IBM in 2006.
DB2 9 allows you to store XML “natively,” as well as useful storage compression to conserve space on your hard drive. IBM refers to the ability to store XML natively under the moniker pureXML(TM).
DB2 Product Package Tools
IBM Db2 data management product package, which contains the following tools:
- Db2 Database
- Db2 Warehouse
- Db2 on Cloud
- Db2 Warehouse on Cloud
- Db2 Big SQL
- Db2 Event Store
Db2 Database
It is a SQL-based RDBMS (relational database management system) that is perfect for your business’s operations. Advanced features such as in-memory technology advanced administration and development tools, storage optimization, workload management, actionable compression, and continuous data availability are all included in the Db2 database software. This database is compatible with Windows, Unix, and Linux.
An enterprise-ready relational database management system for transactional workloads that provides reliability, performance, and cost-effectiveness. Several use cases are supported as an expanded service on the IBM Cloud Pak for Data platform.
Db2 Warehouse
It is an increase in processing capacity that resulted in a data explosion within organizations in general and particular. Warehouses increased in size from GBs to TBs and PBs. Db2 Warehouse adapted as the volume and variety of data is increased.
On-premises data warehouse with built-in machine learning, massively parallel processing, and in-database analytics that is maintained by the client.
In private clouds, virtual private clouds, and other container-supported infrastructures, delivers a client-managed, preconfigured data warehouse. It’s built to be the best hybrid cloud option when you need to keep control of your data but also want the freedom of the cloud.
Db2 on Cloud
It is formerly known as “dashDB for Transactions,” and is also a fully managed cloud SQL database with a high-availability option that boasts a 99.99 percent uptime SLA. It provides autonomous storage and computes scaling, as well as rolling security upgrades. Based on request loads and usage requirements, it scales up and down. It has the most up-to-date encryption, data federation, and backup/recovery features.
Db2 Warehouse on Cloud
It is fully managed and elastic with storage and compute scaling that is independent of each other. is powered by Db2’s autonomous self-tuning engine and runs on an autonomous platform-as-a-service. It uses IBM BLU Acceleration to deliver high performance on complex analytics workloads.
It optimizes highly in the data store, actionable compression, and in-memory processing. Supports a hybrid data management architecture with a broader scope. IBM Cloud and Amazon Web Services are both supported.
Db2 Big SQL
Big SQL was built to work with the whole Db2 family of products, as well as the IBM Integrated Analytics System. Big SQL is part of IBM’s Hybrid Data Management Platform, which is an all-encompassing IBM approach for flexibility and portability, powerful data integration, and flexible licensing.
It allows you to connect multiple databases at once, including HDFS, RDMS, NoSQL databases, object stores, and WebHDFS. A SQL-on-Hadoop engine that supports Hadoop, object stores, and data warehouses and provides massively parallel processing and powerful data querying.
Db2 Event Store
The memory-optimized IBM Db2 Event Store database is designed to consume and analyze streamed data for event-driven applications quickly. It includes IBM Watson Studio software for an integrated, collaborative development experience that includes support for machine learning models.
The Internet of Things (IoT), industrial, telecommunications, financial services, online retail, and other industries that require real-time analytics on streamed large volume, high-velocity data can benefit from Db2 Event Store.
DB2 Editions
ESE/AESE
It is intended for mid-to-large-sized businesses. Linux, UNIX, and Windows are the three platforms available. Partitioning of tables Disaster Recovery with High Availability (HARD) Query Table with Materialization (MQTs) Clustering on many dimensions (MDC) Pure XML Backup Compression Connection Concentrator Federations that are homogeneous.
Server Edition for Workgroups (WSE)
It is intended for workgroups and mid-sized businesses. You may use this WSE to work with – Disaster Recovery with High Availability (HARD) Reorganization of the Internet Support for pure XML Web Service Federation DB2 Federations that are homogeneous SQL replication that is homogeneous Compression of backups.
Express C
It has all of the features of DB2 but costs nothing. It can be installed on any real or virtual system with any configuration size.
It is intended for small and medium-sized businesses. It’s a fully functional DB2 data server. It simply provides a few services. Web Service Federations is included in this edition. Homogeneous federations in DB2 SQL Replications with Homogeneity Compression of backups.
Developer Edition for Enterprise
There is only one application developer available. It’s helpful for designing, developing, and prototyping applications for deployment on any IBM server. The program is not suitable for application development.
